In reality, individuals who commit sins are isolated.
This act serves both as a punishment allowing them to repent, and as a protective measure to prevent further harm to others.
From a similar perspective,
an 'unbridgeable river' exists between a holy God and a person who has sinned.
God is holy and so is the place where He resides.
To meet God, one must be 'holy' - a condition no one can truly fulfill.
This is when Jesus Christ steps in to mend our relationship with God.
"For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son,
how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"
- Romans 5:10, NIV -
The method of reconciling our relationship with God is exceedingly direct, crystal clear, and there is only one way.
That is, we must pay for the sins we've committed.
Unable to pay this debt ourselves, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, paid the price on our behalf.
Jesus Christ, for your sins and mine, and for the sins of all who believe, suffered on the cross to pay the debt of our sins.
Hence, we've moved from being slaves to sin to becoming righteous, gaining the qualification to approach God.
