The methods of God's responses vary throughout the Old Testament.
There were responses where God Himself spoke directly,
as can be seen in the cases of Abraham and Moses where He engaged in conversations with them.
In the case of Joseph in Genesis, there were times when He communicated through dreams.
When revealed through dreams or visions, it could be more akin to viewing a film rather than having a conversation.
In the story of Hannah praying in 1 Samuel, she received a response that she would bear a son through a spiritual leader, a priest.
For Nehemiah, who held a political position, he was given passionate fervor and insights into the Word as a response.
Daniel also had similar experiences to Nehemiah, but he also had instances of visions.
In the New Testament, God's methods of responses show a slight shift.
As Jesus Christ, who is God Himself, was on earth, those who met Him could have a conversation with Him.
After Jesus ascended into heaven,
God the Father sent the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead, to dwell among us on earth.
The Holy Spirit is always with us, constantly teaching us.
"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,
will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
- John 14:26 (NIV) -
One thing we should remember is the need to discern whether what we feel strongly in our hearts after prayer is our own desire or God's response.
This discernment should be based entirely on the 'Word'.
Regardless of the joy in our hearts, it should not go against the principles of God's Word.
Hence, a person who prays should always stay close to the Word.
